DISCRIMINATION OF SPEAKERS USING THE FORMANT DYNAMICS OF /uː/ in BRITISH ENGLISH
نویسندگان
چکیده
A study of speaker-distinguishing properties of the formant dynamics of /uː/ is presented. Measurements at equidistant intervals along the F1 and F2 contours of /uː/ are compared with polynomial characterisations of the contours. Approximating the contours with quadratic and cubic polynomials allows more speaker-distinguishing information to be conveyed with fewer parameters. Based on discriminant analysis, the best value per predictor is provided by a quadratic approximation of F2.

F2 slope as a Perceptual Cue for the Front-Back Contrast in Standard Southern British English.
Acoustic studies of several languages indicate that second-formant (F2) slopes in high vowels have opposing directions (independent of consonantal context): front [iː]-like vowels are produced with a rising F2 slope, whereas back [uː]-like vowels are produced with a falling F2 slope. The present study first reports acoustic measurements that confirm this pattern for the English variety of Stand...
متن کاملDefying gravity: Formant frequencies of English vowels produced in upright and supine body position
This case study investigated the effect of body position on the first three formants (F1, F2, F3) of the British English vowels /iː/, /ɛ/, /æ/, /ɔː/ and /uː/ produced by one male native speaker. While F1 remained unaffected significant changes in F2 and F3 were found for certain vowels when they were produced in a supine rather than in an upright position. F2 was significantly lower for /iː/, /...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملDiscrimination of English vowels in consonantal contexts by native speakers of Japanese and its relations to dynamic information of formants
This study examined how differently native speakers of Japanese discriminated between the American English vowels // and /æ/ in /CVd/ syllables with 23 different initial consonants, and how the differing discrimination was related to the changes of formant patterns throughout the vowels in comparison with the Japanese vowels /e/ and /a/. A perceptual test and formant analyses of the English an...
متن کاملThe Formant Dynamics of Long Close Vowels in Three Varieties of Swedish
This study compares the acoustic realisation of /iː yː ʉː uː/ in three varieties of Swedish: Central Swedish, Estonian Swedish, and Finland Swedish. Vowel tokens were extracted from isolated words produced by six elderly female speakers from each variety. Trajectories of the first three formants were modelled with discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients, enabling the comparison of the form...
